Centennial Farms (Niagara) Inc. announced yesterday that they have sold a majority interest in their promising three year old gelding, Captain Canuck. The imposing dark bay or brown son of Pulpit, out of Magna Cum Laude by Pleasant Tap, was sold to horse racing enthusiast Earle I. Mack, who is best known in local racing circles for guiding Peteski to the Canadian Triple Crown in 1993. Mack, this week also purchased an interest in Turf Melody, a promising three year colt, who will run in this weekend’s Illinois Derby. Captain Canuck is widely regarded as a top contender for the 2010 Queen’s Plate and will be pointed in that direction, with a stop on the Polytrack at Keeneland along the way.
Captain Canuck debuted for Centennial and trainer Josie Carroll on March 6, 2010, at Gulfstream Park, rallying five wide from well off a slow pace to finish a narrow second in a maiden special weight at 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Centennial has retained a minority interest in the gelding; Centennial looks to have its second starter in the Queen’s Plate, the longest running race in North America. In 2008, they sent out Sebastian’s Song to a disappointing tenth place finish.
Centennial’s well known bloodstock agent and legal counsel, Brandon Boone picked out Hip number #45, a $190,000 selection in last year’s Two Olds in Training sale at Ocala. Dominic Dilalla, Centennial’s president and sole shareholder thought right away that the horse would be a late bloomer due to his size and scope. Woodbine conditioner, Donnie MacRae signed the ticket. Terms of the sale of Captain Canuck were not disclosed. This is Centennial’s second news-making deal in just over a year, having sold a majority of their interest in Patena, a son of Seeking the Gold who won the 2008 Display Stakes at Woodbine, to IEAH Stables in early 2009.
Centennial Farms is an racing outfit on the rise. If more racing outfits were as kind and generous as Centennial, public perception would be much better towards the sport. Against horse slaughter and involved in local animal warfare organizations, ex-Centennial rachorses are found homes with various people and organizations throughout the Niagara Region. Donnie MacRae is Centennials primary trainer, Macrae's numbers continue to climb season after season. His numbers with sprinters on the Polytrack are second to none. Another Centennial horse to watch this season is SUPERBULL. A well thought out breeding selection out of Lemon Drop Kid, the horse seems to be developing well. A BETTORS VIEW will follow this horse as the season progresses.
